Prudence Foundation and Prudential plc hosted a panel discussion on 30 May in Geneva at the sidelines of the World Health Assembly 2024, focusing on how to mitigate the health challenges brought by climate change and accelerating health resilience. Experts from different sectors and backgrounds were invited to share their insights and experiences.

The COP28 Declaration on Climate and Health calls for scaled up funding on climate and health including that of private funders. Progress on climate adaptation is slowing on all fronts when it should be accelerating to catch up with rising climate change impacts and risks, according to a new United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report. 2023 showed us the shattering of month by month record high temperatures. Accelerated investments in climate and health solutions from all sectors is critical to avert catastrophic health impacts and prevent millions of deaths. There is opportunity for business community and private sector to support and amplify this work in addition to funding.

On the sidelines of the World Health Assembly, the session aims to discuss and highlight the role of public-private partnerships in advancing work on climate and health, with a focus on Asia and Africa:

  • Challenges, approaches and solutions at intersection of climate & health
  • The role of philanthropy and business on the landscape of solutions
  • The multiple levers that the private sector can use to accelerate solutions
  • Innovative philanthropy-public-private partnerships

Key Observations and Discussions

  • Explored the important role of public-private partnerships in mitigating health challenges brought by climate change and accelerating health resilience with shared perspectives, experiences, and best practices.
  • Emphasised the need for multi-sectoral collaboration to ensure a holistic and practical approach to address global challenges at the local level.
  • Proposed tangible action steps and considerations for private sector as well as government and development organisations that could strengthen the long-term resilience of affected communities.

We are grateful to our partners and panel speakers from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Climate Resilience for All, Save the Children, AVPN, and Geneva Association for making this event possible and engaging.
